A FIGHT to save bushland from clearing to make way for the Preston Industrial Park has been taken on by Bunbury City councillor and self-confessed conservationist Brendan Kelly.
Landcorp has submitted plans for the park to the WA Planning Commission, which it claims will create more than 1000 jobs and will be environmentally friendly.
Cr Kelly has slammed Landcorp’s attitude towards clearing bushland in Greater Bunbury.
“Essentially LandCorp is trying to justify bulldozing bushland because it has been degraded by neglect – self-condemnation about its land stewardship, to say the least,” Cr Kelly said.
Landcorp has dubbed the plans as “environmentally friendly,” with more than 200 hectares sectioned off for land conservation, regeneration and enhancement.
Landcorp business manager David Lewis said the park was the perfect balance of industry and conservation.
Cr Kelly said the Environmental Protection Authority had described the bush that LandCorp wanted to clear as “a regionally significant area of high value which should be retained within the future planning for the Preston Industrial Park”.
“The EPA has also called for development in the Greater Bunbury Region to occur on already cleared land, a position supported by most in the community,” Cr Kelly said.
“I encourage all good thinking people to submit to the EPA in protest against LandCorp’s destructive intent.”
