A dangerous walk to school

18 Nov, 2009 10:18 AM
A BUNBURY councillor has voiced his concerns about the potential dangers of school children crossing Bussell Highway as they travel to and from school.

Councillor Wayne Major put forward a motion at last night’s council meeting for an urgent and safe solution for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on the section of the highway which separates Parks shopping centre from Hay Park.

About 150 school children from Adam Road Primary and Newton Moore Senior High School cross over the dual highway every day.

More than 19,000 vehicles use the section of the highway each day with four per cent of vehicles classified as heavy vehicles.

Cr Major was concerned there was no safe negotiation for the children when crossing the busy road.

He said the section was a "nightmare" and was "badly managed".

Cr Major said he would like to see something done as soon as possible.

"I’m not sure who is responsible," he said.

"Main Roads might have to come to the party and take some responsibility."

He also said it would prove to be a costly exercise but it needed to be dealt with.

"My primary concern is that of the kids," he said.
