Call to strip Bunbury's nudist beach

07 Dec, 2011 08:11 AM
NAKED swimmers and sunbathers on Bunbury’s Back Beach are not something families need to be confronted with, according to a local beachgoer.

South Bunbury resident Jacinta Goerke was walking her dog along the Back Beach last month when she came across a man standing naked in the sand dunes.

A horrified Ms Goerke claimed the man was openly masturbating on the public beach.

“I was shocked and looked away immediately, then I thought ‘why is he doing that?’” she said.

“There were families and young children down by the water right in front of where the man was standing.”

Australind police officer in charge Sergeant Craig Wood said cases of wilful exposure should be reported to police.

A 500 metre stretch of the coast of South Bunbury is a nudist beach designated by the City of Bunbury.

There is a sign to inform people of the nudist beach at the top of the roadside steps but there are currently no signs on the beachfront.

Ms Georke said that people taking a stroll along the sand could unknowingly enter the nude beach without realising where it started and stopped.

Ms Goerke said she believed the nude beach had “had its day” and should be closed down.

“I’m an open-minded person, but I don’t think the Back Beach is an appropriate place for a nudist beach,” she said.

“The beach is a popular place for families and Bunbury is a family community, so I don’t think it belongs here.”

City of Bunbury community law and safety officer John Kowal said signs notifying people of the nudist beach were washed away each winter.

He said the signs were in the process of being replaced and would be erected before Christmas.

Mr Kowal said he received very few complaints about the nudist beach from residents.

Using a friend of the paper to try and stoke a bit of controversy with this old chestnut is pretty poor form.

When it comes to risks to the fabric of society I think lazy journalism is a lot higher on the list than the antics of the wang tan clan.

Nothing wrong with being naked as long as you enjoy it and can handle it.

We are all born that way!

If u live in Bunbury and know the Bunbury Area most people know it is a nudist beach.

I don’t see the sense in moving it but maybe up keep it a bit better. A weekly check to see if the signs are still in place.

But the views from one person isn't and shouldn't be enough to close it down or move it.

I personally am all for it staying where it is I know it's there and as a mum I wouldn't be taking my children there to swim anyway - much safer at Koombana bay.

It sounds to me like the complaints being aired are not about nudists or nude beaches but about lewd behavior on a public beach. Why is it when people complain about sexual offenses they always include nudists who are generally innocent.

There is nothing offensive about the nude body.

The man in question is obviously not a nudist since he shows no concern for those around him.

Sexual activity such as masturbation is inappropriate on any public beach, nude or otherwise.

Ms Goerke's regrettable encounter occurred not because it was a nude beach, but because this nude beach did not enforce appropriate behaviour standards.

Responsible nudists agree that the solution is not to require clothing but to prohibit public sexual behaviour.

What's this about families?

Do they not have bodies too?

If you see someone masturbating in a back yard, will you want to ban back yards?

A nudist beach is one thing, lewd behavior (public sex) is another.

I support nudity on the beach not sex. Having nude beaches signposted at the beach itself not just above warns those not interested in proceeding.

Lots of lewd acts occur at beaches where clothes are worn.

Lewd acts occur in public airports, toilets, carparks, etc.

I don't understand people who claim a naturist beach is incompatble with families and children...

Naturism is about freedom, health and respect: the core values which should be taught to our children!

Being free of clothing is liberating.

It feels more natural than being covered. Somehow being covered hides who you are and how you feel about others.

Being in a group of cloths free individuals feels right too.

It is not a sexual thing.

It is a social thing.

My wife and I are Naturists.

This is what the Americans call nudists.

But were were cloths free long before we were Naturists.

But being a Naturist lets you socialise with other Naturists so we are Naturists.

We hope you don't lose your valuable clothes free beach.

I did not take the poll because I do not live in the area and believe that such decisions are up to the local citizens. However, nude sunbathing is proven to be a healthy source of Vitamin D.

Rather than close the beach, it would be better to prosecute the perverts who are masturbating or doing other sexual things regardless of whether they are nude or dressed.
