Capel man charged over $100,000 burglary

23 Sep, 2009 07:02 PM
SOUTH West detectives have charged a 33-year-old Capel man over a jewellery heist of more than $100,000 worth of items at an Australind store this month.

Steven James Blumb was arrested on Saturday night after Busselton police found some of the stolen jewellery in his car.

It followed a police pursuit on foot through Busselton after police stopped him on Strelly Street for speeding.

Detective Sergeant Darren Clifton said investigations into the burglary would continue.

"We have other information in relation to the burglary that other people may have been involved," he said.

Blumb was not required to plead when he faced Bunbury Magistrates Court on Monday charged with burglary and stealing.

He did plead guilty to traffic and drug offences from when he was arrested by Busselton police.

It is alleged that Blumb was driving an unlicensed car with stolen plates when he was pulled over by Busselton police.

"Police also found a small amount of drugs believed to be amphetamines," Det. Sgnt Clifton said.

He said the amount of jewellery recovered was still being determined.

The Australind Shopping Centre has reviewed and improved its security since the burglary of its tenant Australind Jewellers on the weekend of September 12.

Anyone with information was urged to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
