BUNBURY drivers have been named the worst in the State when it comes to understanding basic roundabout rules.
It has been revealed SGIO received more than 60 insurance claims as a direct result of roundabout collisions in Bunbury in the past year.
According to new research by the insurance company almost one in two drivers do not understand basic roundabout rules.
SGIO State Manager Colin Tierney said the figures were a concern and he encouraged drivers to think about their habits.
“Motorists should be aware of and giving way to all traffic on the roundabout – not just what is happening on the right,” Mr Tierney said.
“We should also be leaving plenty of stopping distance from the car in front as we approach the roundabout.”
SGIO recorded 67 insurance claims in total for Bunbury, more than double the Perth suburb of Melville which ranked second with 32 claims.
Joondalup came in third with 31 claims, Rockingham 30 and Canning 29.
Main Roads regional manager Brett Belstead said the Eelup Roundabout was the worst for collisions and there were more than 80 accidents at the site each year.
Other roundabouts which are known to be collision hotspots were roundabouts at Parade Road and Washington Road, Bussell Highway and Brittain Road, Hamilton Drive and Old Coast Road and Bussell Highway and Robertson Drive.
Mr Bellstead said about 80 per cent of the collisions were rear enders and most collisions resulted in vehicle damage rather than serious injury.
“Drivers just need to follow the arrows that are on the road,” he said.
“Roundabouts should be treated no differently than a two lane road.
“Indicate to come off and indicate to turn right.”
