Council says no to parade

18 Nov, 2009 07:58 PM
THE idea of bringing a gay and lesbian Pride Parade to Bunbury received no support at the City of Bunbury council meeting last night.

Councillor Wayne Major put forward the motion to investigate the feasibility of the parade but no councillors were willing to second the motion.

“It was a very disappointing result but I will be pursuing the matter further,” Cr Major said.

Former Bunbury resident and Gay in WA website blogger Daniel Smith sparked the idea of Bunbury hosting the Pride Parade traditionally held in Northbridge.

“Seven years after gay and lesbian law reforms, it has been shown that we still have a long way to go to achieve acceptance, particularly in regional areas,” Mr Smith said.

The Perth based Pride committee will hold a meeting within weeks to discuss the possibility of re-locating the parade to regional centres.

As I stated earlier in a letter, never ever would Bunbury go ahead with such a Parade.

Too many people live there whose mindset is as follows: “But not in my country!”

God am I happy to have left this backwards orientated city.

It is indeed an intellectual disaster zone, with an extreme hostile position against marginal groups, especially in this (sexual) context.

What real harm would this cause by hosting the parade in Bunbury?

If you think there is no one living in Bunbury that is of this sexual lifestyle is just kidding themselves.

This will not cause the end of the world and maybe we can avoid the backwater tag that some people like to throw Bunbury’s way.

The hard facts are that we are now living in 2009 and not 1959 so its time to get with the times.

Poor old backward Bunbury!

Don't these nay-sayers realise that events such as these would actually be good for the city?

They bring more visitors, more business, more life, more money. Who knows, it could even be fun!

I understand Albany is happy to consider hosting such an event - looks like their city officials are somewhat more forward-thinking than Bunbury's.
