BUNBURY has all the right ingredients to host a gay and lesbian parade, according to a City of Bunbury councillor.
Cr Wayne Major put forward the plan to discuss the feasibility of holding a gay and lesbian parade in Bunbury at council last night.
He said he was expecting a good result "as long as emotions and God were kept out of discussions."
"I will be taking a strong business and tourism point of view as there are huge economic benefits to be had," Cr Major said.
The idea of relocating the 20-year-old Pride Parade from its home in Northbridge to regional centres was sparked by Perth based Gay in WA blogger Daniel Smith.
Mr Smith said there were two essential ingredients to the success of the event in Bunbury.
"Fostering local involvement in the form of an organising committee is the first challenge," Mr Smith said.
"Secondly, the City of Perth provides the Pride committee with $20,000 each year to meet the costs of the event, so financial support from local council is vital."
Cr Major believes these prerequisites can easily be met.
"I think Bunbury residents, both straight and gay, would be keen to help get the event off the ground and I have already had feedback to support this."
He also said money would not be a problem when weighed up against the possible economic benefits of hosting the parade.
"Bunbury is a very rich little city and getting financial backing from council is more than possible," Cr Major said.
"We would conduct a quick feasibility study and begin allocating money to the event."
