NON-profit organisation Bunbury Dolphin Discovery is seeking a multi-million dollar commitment from the State Government to improve its Koombana Bay facilities.
The centre is seeking $4.8 million of State Government funds over three years to be spent on refurbishment, new displays and research.
Bunbury Dolphin Discovery vice chairman Keith Warrick said the funding was vital for the centre.
“The board has been working on a strategy to give Bunbury Dolphin Discovery a sustainable future,” he said.
“We want to take it into positive community and tourism territory that hasn’t been possible in the past because of funding.”
Under the proposal the centre would establish interactive displays including the creation of a virtual submarine tour using state of the art technology, an expanded touch pond, 3D theatre and other educational displays.
“They will take over from our more static displays,” Mr Warrick said.
The centre also hopes to establish a partnership with Scitech Discovery Centre in Perth with the aim to create interactive, hands on experiences similar to Scitech, but on a smaller, more flexible scale.
The creation of an all-year-round attraction was also a focus for the board.
“The winter is a difficult time,” Mr Warrick said.
“We’re suggesting a product that isn’t affected by seasonality.”
Mr Warrick said the proposed upgrade would further enhance educational, conservational and tourism experiences.
“The development would ramp up those three key areas to a fantastic new level,” he said.
