THE family of an elderly grandfather who was bashed with a baseball bat as he went for his morning walk has offered a reward of $3000 to anyone with information on the “cowardly” attack.
According to Bunbury police the 88-year-old grandfather was walking along Hamilton Road about 4.30am when two men in a small black car pulled up alongside him.
The passenger armed with a baseball bat got out of the car and approached the man.
Police say the attacker demanded money and when the elderly man replied he did not have any, he was assaulted with the bat.
The victim suffered injuries to his head and was knocked unconscious.
When he regained consciousness, he walked back to his Eaton home a short distance away and called police.
Detective senior sergeant Jon Munday said the attack was “extremely cowardly”.
“It was a very callous act,” he said.
“It is mind boggling…what reason would these men have to hit the gentleman.
Detective Munday said it was a terrible incident.
“We need to get to the bottom of this,” he said.
“It seems like a random, opportunistic attack.
“Residents in the area should have no concern about walking around the streets.”
The victim was taken to the Bunbury Regional Hospital for treatment and has a fractured jaw.
Detective Munday said the man was sore but upbeat despite the early morning attack.
He is expected to remain in hospital overnight.
The victim’s family has offered a reward of $3000 for anyone with information about the incident.
Police are calling for witnesses to the attack. If you have any information, call Bunbury police on 9722 2111.
