International acts to headline festival

03 Feb, 2010 08:57 AM
A HOST of international and national acts have been confirmed to rock Bunbury at a festival set to rival that of Busselton’s Southbound music festival and Perth’s Big Day Out concert.

Australian rock royalty Silverchair will headline this year’s Groovin the Moo concert along with Perth’s very own superstars and ARIA darlings Empire of the Sun, American indie rockers Vampire Weekend and Canadian song-sisters Tegan and Sara.

Also on the bill are Grinspoon, British India, Spoon, Lisa Mitc-hell, Miami Horror, Kisschasy, Bag Raiders, Muph and Platonic, Illy, Ajax, Funkoars, Jonathan Boulet, Yacht Club DJs, Killaq-ueens and The Only with more to be announced.

The concert will be held at the Pat Usher Foreshore and is certain to draw thousands to the city centre.

Groovin the Moo will make its way around the country stopping by Bendigo, Townsville, Maitland and Canberra before its final show in Bunbury on May 15.

Bunbury Mayor David Smith ,who opposed council’s decision to allocate funding to the event, said he was very pleased with the list of artists on the line-up.

"With the line-up arranged it should be the biggest event of its kind held in Bunbury," Mayor Smith said.

"The event should attract just as many people as Busselton’s Southbound festival or Perth’s Big Day Out."

Mayor Smith said the concert area had the capacity to accommodate about 30,000 music lovers.

He said the economic benefit to the region would be huge especially for the hospitality and accommodation industry.

"Despite my initial reservations, I am looking forward to it being a great success," he said.

Sunset Events managing director and promoter Dave Chitty said he was thrilled to be a part of introducing the event to Bunbury.

"The Bunbury region has a significant youth population and is close to several country towns and cities that have limited access to contemporary music culture," he said.

"We applaud the City of Bunbury’s support for this event and look forward to working with them and our other supporters to help develop contemporary youth culture in Bunbury and the surrounding regions".

Council has already signed on for a three year program with the organisers and if successful Groovin the Moo will become an annual event.

Mayor Smith’s only concern was providing enough accommodation for the thousands of revellers.

"We will have to address the issue when it arises," he said.

"We may have to provide some temporary accommodation."

Groovin the Moo replaces the now defunct International Jazz Festival which was an annual event on the City’s event calendar.

The festival was canned in 2008 due to poor attendance and a lack of interest by residents and visitors.

Groovin the Moo which has been touring for the past six years will feature two stages and the huge Moolin Rouge circus big top playing home to the dance tent.

Last year’s tour attracted more than 38,000 punters Australia wide.

Tickets go on sale February 16 from moshtix.com.au
