Killer's release too soon say dead boy's parents

01 Jul, 2009 11:14 AM
THE parents of a teenage boy shot dead at their family home over a $100 drug debt have pleaded with the Prisoner Review Board that his killer not be allowed to return to Bunbury.

The board is expected to decide whether or not to grant parole to Jack Benjamin Hall next week after little more than two years in jail for shooting dead Lawrence William Thomas Dix in the doorway of his Dalyellup home.

Annette and Steve Dix said two years was too soon to have come to terms with their loss, let alone the thought of them or their sons bumping into Hall on the street.

Hall received a reduced sentence under truth in sentencing legislation after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

A jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict at his murder trial.

Mrs Dix said Bunbury was still a small town in many ways and their family and friends would be affected if Hall returned.

“We should be able to go about our lives without fear of coming face to face with the killer of our child,” she said.

She said part of her fears were that she did not want to see anyone else hurt.

“And as weird as it sounds, we’re concerned for the perpetrator should he decide to come back,” she said.

The Dix’s still live in the house where Lawrence was shot and for the first time are considering the possibility of moving.

“Now we certainly have to think about it but why would we, we didn’t do anything wrong,” Mrs Dix said.

The Dix’s have also asked the review board if Hall is allowed to return that he not be allowed to enter Dalyellup or other places the family frequently visit.

Mrs Dix said Hall had been invited by the review board to negotiate with the parents as part of its process, but he had refused.

She said they were constantly told how remorseful he was but they had never heard it from him.
