Labor's 2005 election promises checklist

Millions were promised for Bunbury by the Labor government before the 2005 State election. But how has the Government performed in delivering those promises? Liberal’s John Castrilli and Labor’s Peter Macfarlane give us their views on some of the key promises...

$51 million overhaul of Bunbury’s education system

Macfarlane - The total was increased during the Carpenter Government to more than $65 million.

$4.58m for extra computers in Bunbury schools,

Macfarlane - Delivered

$6.5m for cancer treatment at Bunbury Hospital

Castrilli - Recently we had the fourth re-announcement of the Cancer Radiation Unit that was meant to start construction in 2005-06.

Macfarlane - The facility was delayed due to federal requirements. The State Government has just committed $9m for its co-funding contribution.

$140m Bunbury Waterfront Project

Macfarlane - Planning for Stage One and community consultation underway.

Start construction of the Peel Deviation

Macfarlane - It is under construction and ahead of schedule.

$20m for port access road

Castrilli - Port Access Road construction did not start in 2006-07 as promised.

Macfarlane - We acquired the land and it is now under construction.

$11m to help prepare Bunbury Port for container

trade

Castrilli - This was first announced in the first term of the Gallop Government and recently discounted by the Carpenter Government.

Macfarlane - The planning and infrastructure minister said last Friday that the money is available but no-one has come forward with a business case for the facility to be built.

$11.1m on mental health services

Macfarlane - We increased funding for Bunbury Hospital facilities and community residential unis to more than $11 million.

$2.5m Bunbury Dental Clinic upgrade

Macfarlane - Was increased to $3.6 million.

Upgrade track for the Australind Train

Macfarlane - Concrete sleepers and train track upgraded

A new 70-bed minimum-security unit at Bunbury

Regional Prison

Macfarlane - Delivered and increased to $17.7 million.

$40,000 to continue the Youth Driver Training

Program in Bunbury

Macfarlane - Delivered

$50,000 environmental audit of the Leschenault Inlet

Macfarlane - Delivered and we also upgraded commitment to include dredging.

$225,000 for an Interpretative and Education Centre

for Big Swamp parkland and wildlife centre

Castrilli - Delivered

$150,000 Tuart Interpretative Walk Trail in the Ocean

to Preston River Regional Park

Macfarlane - Delivered

Increase Bunbury’s police dog squad

$50,000 community facilities upgrade, Bunbury

$50,000 for upgrade and maintenance of the Old

Courthouse.

Macfarlane - Delivered

Extra labor Government funding delivered since 2005 in the Greater Bunbury area

Bunbury Back Beach commitment increased to $14 million.

$2.5 million to Bunbury’s new library and digital centre.

$2.5 million to assist rebuilding Bunbury’s iconic St Patrick’s Cathedral, damaged beyond repair in Bunbury’s tornado.

$3.29 million to complete the first phase of an upgrade of Bunbury’s South West regional College of TAFE.

$12.2 million to build the new Kingston Primary School, due for completion in February 2009.

$7 million to completed a new water pumping station and pipeline for Bunbury’s water supply.

$1 million to upgrade facilities at Bunbury Regional Art Galleries.

$250,000 towards the South West Academy of Sport.

$700,000 for a third magistrate and extra staff in Bunbury

Mr Castrilli said several other promises had not been met.

The promise to increase Coal Production from 6m to 10m tonnes a year has not happened. And $60m export trials for the Port haven’t been done.

Bunbury-Greenbushes Railway Line was an election promise that had not been realised.

Bunbury Graffiti Removal Unit hasn’t been seen

Intensive Care Unit. Constant promises that business plans are underway but nothing on the ground. $300,000 in the last three Budgets but never spent.

$120million upgrade of public housing yet there are now 66 less Homeswest houses in Bunbury than there were 10 years ago.
