THE small beachside town of Binningup has been thrust into the limelight this week after a shark attacked a 46-year-old man while he was diving off the coast.
Television crews have descended on the town every day since Sunday to find out the gory details of what happened to Binningup's Allan Oppert, with the Seven Network's Today Tonight signing exclusive rights to the story.
Because of the deal the Bunbury Mail cannot tell you Mr Oppert's firsthand account of how he escaped from the three-metre shark.
As for other Binningup residents, most don't understand what all the fuss is about, noting that the attack actually happened off Preston Beach rather than Binningup.
It just happens that Binningup was where the ambulance picked up the injured diver.
Department of Fisheries acting media and public affairs manager Fiona O'Connor has been able to provide some insight into the attack, however.
She said Mr Oppert had been out on a fishing and crayfishing run with two friends about 17 kilometres west of Preston Beach on Sunday when the shark struck.
Mr Oppert was diving alone in about 34 metres of water when the shark attacked him from below, biting him several times on the leg before he was able to scramble to the surface to be rescued.
Nearby fishers helped to distract the shark by cutting their lines and anchor while Mr Oppert's friends pulled him aboard and headed back to the Binningup shore where they met an ambulance.
Mr Oppert suffered seven lacerations to his right leg and four to his left and is expected to remain in hospital for a few days after undergoing emergency surgery and receiving 108 stitches.
The Department of Fisheries will use photos of Mr Oppert's injuries to determine the type of shark that attacked him.
