Shopping centres to expand

01 Jul, 2009 08:36 AM
GREATER Bunbury will soon become a shopping Mecca with the completion of three large shopping centres set for the next few years.

Earthworks for the Treendale shopping centre are almost complete.

Plans for the Eaton Fair expansion are expected to be lodged within a fortnight and plans for the Bunbury Forum development are going ahead.

Treendale’s Kevin Coote, whose family has owned the land for decades, said the initial opening date of 2010 was pushed back after delays in the planning approvals process.

But the water, sewage and drainage services for the multi-million dollar project are installed and stage one, a supermarket, mall and specialty stores, should be complete by 2011.

Mr Coote said stage two was dependent on further growth in the area and the bridge over the Collie River.

Stage two would involve a discount department store, tavern, medical centre, service station, fast food outlets and office space.

It is only a matter of days before Citygate Properties put forward the plans to the Dardanup shire for approval to create an Eaton town centre.

Citygate principal Geoff Prosser said the planning for such a huge development was detailed, putting back the approvals process and construction dates.

The plans involve the building of a discount department store such as Big W or Target, extension of Woolworths, an increase in specialty store numbers as well as offices, medical facilities and a residential area.

Centre manager for the Bunbury Forum Vern Merchant said construction on its expansion should start by 2011.

Estimated to cost $26 million in 2007, Mr Merchant said it was hard to say how much it would cost now but they were still going along with the original design.
