POLICE: RAPID growth across the South West has prompted an urgent call for extra police numbers to ensure the safety of the community.
Bunbury and Busselton MLAs John Castrilli and Troy Buswell have joined forces to request an extra allocation of police for the South West.
They have approached Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan with their request.
“In the Bunbury and Busselton regions we have a booming population creating a very high demand on resources, and we are asking for the commissioner to take this into consideration,” Mr Castrilli said.
“We can all work together to help keep our community safe, and I felt that this request was a step that could be taken to support our local police because of the growth in the South West district.”
The leaders have highlighted Australind and Busselton Police Stations as high priority as they are “operating under enormous pressure.”
“Our research indicates that both these stations have registered significantly higher ratios of duties per police officer than other comparable stations within the state,” Mr Castrilli said.
“Australind Police Station has recorded a workload of three times that of other stations.”
Mr Castrilli said police numbers in WA were at a record level.
“I want to see Bunbury and the South West receive its fair allocation to make sure that our fast-growing towns and suburbs are well-served by police.”
A commissioner spokeswoman said a recent assessment identified the need for greater resources in Australind.
She said as a result of the assessment two additional police officers were assigned to the station.
“Assessment of stations within the South West area will be done in conjunction with the needs of all other regions and police districts,” the spokeswoman said.
