Vandals target mini-railway

03 Jun, 2009 03:33 PM
THE South West’s only miniature railway was targeted by mindless vandals on the weekend.

The vandals drove a car into the Forrest Park Miniature Railway grounds in the early hours of Sunday morning and damaged a 10 metre section of the railway track lifting it more than a metre off the ground.

Police were notified of the damage and pushed the track back down to avoid any potential injuries to the public.

South West model engineering safety officer Bert Moran said it was not the first time the local attraction has been targeted by vandals.

“It is very frustrating,” he said.

“Especially when you volunteer your time.”

The miniature railway has 50 active volunteers and attracts more than 500 people when it runs on the third Sunday of every month.

Mr Moran said if the damage was not being repaired by volunteers it would cost the club about $2000 to fix.

The site has been targeted by vandals in the past.

“It tends to be around school holidays,” Mr Moran said.

“It is usually stupid stuff like graffiti on walls.”

One incident included large rocks being dropped onto the tracks in a deliberate attempt to damage the line.

Mr Moran assured the damage would be repaired before the club’s next event on June 21.

“There are not too many things going on that you can take children to,” Mr Moran said.

“We will be up and running for the next event.”

Mr Moran said the people responsible for the vandalism needed to start respecting other people and their property.

Bunbury police were investigating the incident and anyone with information can contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

This is definitely a very shallow and mindless act.

Hopefully those responsible feel remorse, shame but more importantly decide to volunteer their time to repair the damage they have done ... that would be the ultimate act of responsibility and humanity that these offenders could show now.
