Youth lept from car to avoid police

05 Dec, 2001 10:16 AM
A BUNBURY teenager who jumped from a moving car to avoid police was fined more than $1,000 in the Bunbury Children’s Court on Friday.

The 17-year-old boy was charged with dangerous driving, breaching a learner’s permit and driving an unlicensed vehicle on November 22.

Prosecutor Brian McC-ormack told the court police saw the boy driving on Rendell Elbow at about 7.55am without a front number plate.

He said the boy accelerated heavily when he spotted police. The boy then slowed the car and jumped from it to flee.

Sgt McCormack said the car collided with a letterbox and narrowly missed a house and parked vehicle.

The car was unlicensed and the boy had not displayed L-plates.

The court was told the boy panicked when he saw police and later confessed to his actions.

Magistrate Robert Law-rence said the actions could have had “disastrous” effects on innocent people.

“You should not have been driving,” Magistrate Lawrence said.

“Your actions were extremely serious and extremely dangerous.”

The boy was fined $400 for dangerous driving, $100 for breaching his permit and $200 for driving an unlicensed vehicle.

He was ordered to pay $300 restitution for the letterbox. He was prevented from obtaining a licence for 18 months.
