BASKETBALL: A slam dunk win is on the horizon for the men’s and women’s teams for the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers.
Slammers’ senior director Russell Donovan spoke to mail sport about how both teams seemed set to have an exceptional year.
The men’s team will welcome two imports of quality NBA standard in Senario Hillman and Carlos White.
Hillman is well known for his incredulous slam dunk methods that Donovan said will boost the bottom ladder team.
“He is an excitement machine,” he said.
“(Coach) Greg Worthington has a young team to work with this year but there are plenty of numbers this pre-season.
“They’re better prepared than previous years.”
Mr Donovan said the women’s team could expect to shine this year with a new coach from Brisbane set to arrive next week.
Darren Austin is a former WNBL and championship coach which Donovan said will add to this year’s keen team.
Last year the team won just two games out of 22 and finished second-last on the ladder.
“His experience will be invaluable to the team,” he said.
The team has signed Zoe Harper, Cara Hargraves and home-grown talent Bianca Donovan to the team.
Donovan and Hargraves come to the Slammers from the West Coast Waves.
The team is also seeking out an American female player.
“They’ve never made the play-offs and I think they have a really good chance this year,” Donovan said.
“They’re a keen young group.”
Donovan said organisers and team members were very excited for this year’s season.
“It’s been great to get Collie Crane Hire on board – because of their support we have really been able to get cranking this year,” he said.
“The teams will definitely be more competitive than they’ve been the last two to three years.
“We have a strong playing group – fans and supporters can expect a far better year than last year.”
