Bunbury to host Warrior’s cricket match

22/07/2008 7:35:00 PM
Cricket: For the first time ever Bunbury will host a Cricket Australia one day match between the Retravision Warriors and South Australia.

The match will take place of Sunday February 8 2009 at Hands Memorial Oval.

It will be the first time WA has played a domestic limited-overs game away from the WACA Ground and follows the successful staging of a Cricket Australia Cup encounter between the WA and SA Second XIs last February.

Hands Oval will now join other regional venues around Australia which have hosted interstate matches.

WACA Chief Executive Officer Graeme Wood said taking an interstate fixture to Bunbury was a reward for the outstanding contribution the South West had made to cricket in the state.

“The facilities at Hands Oval are excellent and comparable to any of Perth’s district grounds and the pitch that was installed last year by WACA curators Cameron Sutherland and Rohan Matthews played extremely well for the Cricket Australia Cup match.

City of Bunbury Chief Executive Officer Greg Trevaskis said the council was very pleased with the whole project including co-operation with the WACA, local cricket, local football, the city’s curator staff and the interest the match created in the community.

“We hope several thousand people will attend this match and support the Retravision Warriors to encourage more events of this type to be attracted to the city.”

“The community benefits in many ways through holding these events including local hotels, restaurants, ground improvements and facilities developments,” said Mr Trevaskis.
