 Inaccurate Panthers keep top spot

Inaccurate Panthers keep top spot

01 Jul, 2009 08:21 AM
IT was all about Bulls, not the Chicago variety but our very own Harvey Bulls in round 11 of South West Football League fixtures last weekend when Ned's mob downed Augusta Margaret River at the Harvey Recreation Ground to record their first ever win since joining the league this year.

And I understand there was much jubilation in the old town Sunday night after the 7.9 (51) to 2.3 (15) victory in which Sam Hart booted four goals and the consistent Josh Krispyn turned in another best afield performance.

Confronting weather conditions faced all teams on the weekend and that certainly contributed to a woefully inaccurate Carey Park who defeated an undermanned Eaton Boomers 11.22 to 5.3 after the Panthers had held the opposition goalless until midway through the third quarter.

Allowing for the conditions there was some good football played with players on both sides adapting with good wet ball handling, marking and kicking particularly from young Panther Kirk Ugle who's foot passing is a delight to watch particularly a beautiful pass to leading forward Michael McMillan. Not sure about the hair cut though Kirk.

Leigh McGuire was one of Carey Parks best along with “little” Poopsie Carlson who showed the benefit of his army training

The Park didn't take long to replace big man Scott Houghton when the number 15 jumper was worn by East Fremantle recruit Jack Peperone who looks like he will become an asset. Good to see Brendan Barnard back from Margaret River and stripping for his old club and Viv Blurton returning.

Eaton tried hard and big ruckman Stephen Beal put in a big effort to be his team’s best along with David Blackman, Wil Oelsnik and Mick Green but the team was outclassed and sadly missed players like captain Matt Buchanan, Troy Johnson and vice captain Dan Fuller.

In other matches Bunbury lost by nine points to Collie Eagles at Collie but would be consoled by the fact they were without their star ruckman Jacob Williams and consistent Dwayne Griffin who could have made a difference to the result while Collie Eagles were best served by Kane Bebbington and Jarrod Martin.

South Bunbury recorded a sound victory in the conditions over Busselton who are fast running out of chances of making the finals and Harvey Brunswick Leschenault were easy winners over Donny-brook at V.C.Mitchell Park leaving the top five in order Carey Park, South Bunbury, Collie, Bunbury and HBL.

Highlight

Undoubtably , Harvey Bulls first win and the performances of HBL's Anthony Morabito and Carey Park's Clint Garlett in the National under 18's championships which has been won by WA. Both players will be under serious AFL draft contention this year. Keep an eye out too for Eaton’s Aaron Black who is earning big wraps with Peel Thunder.

Lowlight

Sadly I must mention the passing of Eaton Boomers coach Peter Butcher who lost his battle with illness on Monday morning.

Butch as he was known was a stalwart of football in the South West and will be sadly missed by many.

I have never met anyone who had a bad word to say about him and that says something in football circles. Rest in peace Peter.

Sincere sympathy to the Butcher family and the Eaton Boomers.

Game of the week

Bunbury versus Carey Park should be a ripper. Carey Park are undefeated after round 11 with their big men, captain Shane Nani, Michael McMillan, Michael Finn and Damian Gasper along with the running brigade led by Roche, Virgo and the McGuires all in good form.

However, the Bulldogs have improved and Jacob Williams is close to the League's premier ruckman.

THE BUTLER'S TIPS: Harvey Bruns-wick Leschenault, Carey Park, Collie Eagles, South Bunbury and Busselton.
