SCHOLARSHIPS: More than 80 athletes across the South West region have received funding as part of the Smarter than Smoking Country Sport Scholarships.
There were 250 applicants for scholarships in a range of sports including athletics, swimming, BMX and basketball.
One of the scholarship winners was Adele Schultz, a 15-year-old swimmer who hopes to achieve a national level in her swimming.
“I enjoy the sport and will keep doing it until I don’t enjoy it anymore,” she said.
“I hope to get a scholarship for the Australian Institute of Sport.”
Schultz has broken three individual WA state records as well as 152 individual WA country records.
She was also recognised for winning the presidents award the the WA Vorgee Swimmer of the Year awards, winning the Old Court trophy which is the highest State championship award and has a scholarship with the South West Sports Academy.
Jasmine Klumpp, 17, is rising through the ranks in her Taekwondo career with her sights set on the Olympics.
Klumpp was awarded the scholarship to assist her for accommodation, travel and equipment expenses.
“I was recognised for representing Australia at the World Junior Championships in 2008,” she said.
“It is not a common thing for a rural athlete and this made me stand out.”
Klumpp won the national championships two years in a row in both 2009 and 2010.
She has a scholarship with the South West Academy of Sport and has been in the WA State team for the past five years.
Thomas Quaife, 16, is an athletics star who was also awarded a scholarship.
Quaife was awarded the scholarship for travel expenses being a regional athlete who travels to Perth a lot for training sessions and competitions.
He was recognised for his achievements in the State Championships for both Little Athletics and Athletics Western Australia as well as for placing sixth in the 400m at the National Championships.
