International focus paying rewards for martial artists

10 Jul, 2008 10:40 AM
TAEKWONDO: A team of six competitors from Taekwondo Central are currently training in Seoul, Korea over the next two weeks to compete in the sport’s largest competition.

At the second World Taekwondo Culture Expo, Jasmine Klumpp, Jake Klumpp, Ajana Plunkett, Tanya Howlett, Ashley James and Branden Madaffari will compete among 3500 athletes from more than 40 countries.

Accompanied by their instructors Justin and Melissa Warren, the team will spend two days training and doing seminars with some Korean martial arts grand masters to learn some of the latest self defence techniques.

“This level of competition in the homeland of Taekwondo will put us in a great position to get the results we want,” said fourth Dan Blackbelt and Taekwondo Central head instructor Justin Warren.

“We have always had a strong competition team who have already won 138 WA State Titles and 55 Australian Champions over the years.

“With the exposure to this kind of competition and four of our members competing part of our leadership instructor team, this ensures the skills will get passed on to all our students in our local clubs.”

The club has made a push this year to expose its athletes to as much international competition as possible and it has paid dividends, with Jasmine Klumpp making the Australian Junior Team for the World Championships earlier in 2008.

The team is also focused on getting results for the upcoming Commonwealth Championships in Canada and Oceanic Championships in New Zealand.
