BUNBURY'S representation for the 2012 London Olympics keeps getting better as four athletes have been named to represent our country.
You may recognise the names of Jayde Taylor, Alex Hagan, Lauren Reynolds and Mark Worthington who are among the Olympic team.
Taylor found out about her fate in the national hockey team nearly two weeks ago via email.
“I was extremely excited, I had to read the email a few times to make sure,” she said.
Taylor moved to Bunbury in 1998 with her family and it was here that she picked up the sport.
She said she played a range of sports and honed in on her hockey when she was selected for state in 2000.
Taylor said she loved the competitiveness of the sport as well as the team atmosphere.
Hagan won her place in the women’s eight Olympic team with only five weeks practice.
“The whole Olympic process for the women’s eight only started in late March early April – my partner and I Hannah Vermeersch gave it a shot figuring we had nothing to lose,” she said.
Hagan said the race was a huge motivator for the team who are even more “hungrier for success”.
Hagan has been rowing since she was 12-years-old and said the Bunbury Rowing Club was a huge support.
Jamie Jones from Bunbury Rowing Club was Hagan’s coach until 2010 when she moved to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
Reynolds will also make her Olympic debut as part of the BMX team.
Reynolds was the highest finishing Australian in the 2011 World BMX Championships.
Worthington will make his second appearance for the Australian Boomers.
Worthington has seen great success in the green and gold when the Boomers won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
