The Olympic distance event was hosted by the Bunbury Triathlon Club and was the opening race of the State triathlon series including a 1500m swim, 40km bike ride and a 10km run.

Many triathletes from the local club did extremely well on the day.

Geoff Wright came second in the 40 to 49 age group over the sprint distance of a 750m swim, 20 km bike ride and a 5 km run.

Lauren Lander (14-19) and Kasey Emerson (20-29) also finished second in their respective age groups.

Over the Olympic distance Chris Kiley (55-59) and Nancy Warnock (50-54) both won their age group category.

Kiley continues an amazing racing program, having recently competed at the World Olympic Distance triathlon and became an age group world champion at the World Long Course Championships in Perth.

Local super fish Kylie English managed second place in her age group while Francyne Rosel, Jamie Rankin and Jim Hedderwick all made the podium with third place in their age group.

A local team led by triathlon stalwart Peter Hastie took the honours in the teams Olympic distance event.

The Olympic distance event was also the opening race of the new South West Escape Series.

Bunbury, Stadium and Albany tri clubs are teaming up to host this regional series, including the Karri Valley and Albany triathlons.

Bunbury superstar triathlete and current State Olympic distance champion Ryan Bailie is currently in Wollongong at the NSW Institute of Sport on a four week preparation block leading into his full time triathlon scholarship.
