THE controversial hug ban at Adam Road Primary School has been overturned after a school board meeting last Tuesday.
The changes recognise hugging between students is appropriate “in some situations”.
The ruling backflip comes two weeks after Year 6 student Amber Ablett received detention for hugging her friend goodbye.
The news of her detention gained national headlines and put the school’s decision in the spotlight.
Acting principal Gemma Preston said the school was committed to providing a supportive, nurturing and safe learning environment for its students.
“I believe we have reached a common sense solution to this issue and look forward to continued support from students and the school community,” she said.
“As a school we aim to reach appropriate outcomes for all members of our school community.”
The school maintained that physical contact such as “squeezing and hurting another child” is not acceptable and teachers would make such judgment.
Ms Preston said students would attend an assembly this week to confirm the school’s position on appropriate behaviour.
