Destructive weather set to hit Bunbury

A SEVERE weather warning has been forecast for Tuesday with wind gusts expected to reach 100 km per hour in the South West.

The cold front is expected to reach the Capes around 2pm on Tuesday afternoon and extend eastwards along the south coast late afternoon and evening.

The worst period of bad weather will be between 2pm and 4pm.

Thunderstorms are also possible.

These winds will be similar to those experienced in the destructive storm which hit Bunbury on Sunday June 10 which caused widespread damage and power outages.

The winds will affect people in parts of WA southwest of a line from Mandurah to Walpole which includes people in, near or between the following towns of Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River and Bridgetown.

In isolated areas dangerous gusts in excess of 125 kilometres per hour could cause significant damage.

The damaging winds are likely to develop about the Capes early on Tuesday morning and extend to remaining parts later in the morning.

Thunderstorms are also possible.

Higher than normal tides may result in flooding of low-lying coastal areas in the Geographe Bay area, including Busselton and Dunsborough, on Tuesday morning.

This is typical weather for this time of year.

What to do

For personal safety FESA State Emergency Service [SES] advises you to secure loose objects, move vehicles under cover and stay inside away from windows.

If caught outside you should find shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.

If you own a boat ensure it is securely moored.

Take extra care on the roads as flooding is possible.

If you are driving through heavy rain slow down and turn your lights on or if visibility becomes low pull over and park until it passes.
