A Mandurah mum who stood by her son's side through a serious drug addiction has been named Western Australia's mother of the year.
Jan Van Stekelenburg, 59 was named the WA Barnardos Australia's Mother of the Year 2013 on Monday morning.
She was nominated by her daughter Kym.
In 2010, Mrs Stekelenburg's son developed a drug addiction.
She supported him through many ups and downs, even selling an investment property to assist with his debts.
Mrs Stekelenburg also stepped in to help her daughter when she had difficulties.
When her daughter Kym had her first child, she suffered postnatal depression and an anxiety disorder.
Mrs Stekelenburg moved into her daughter's home for six weeks to help the family out with feeding, cooking and cleaning.
WA Community Services Minister Tony Simpson said Mrs Stekelenburg embodied "determination and never-failing love for her family."
Mrs Stekelenburg will attend a luncheon in Sydney next month where the national winner of the 2013 Barnardos Australia's Mother of the Year will be named.
