THE Bunbury community is invited to participate in the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee Week next week.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the first Yirrkala Bark petition given to government.
Bunbury NAIDOC member Karen Jetta said the petition was the beginning of land rights and self determination for Indigenous Australians.
To celebrate the anniversary and share the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander’s culture, Bunbury has a full week of activities.
Starting on Monday July 8 is the flagraising ceremony at the South West Health Campus.
Ms Jetta said the flagraising ceremony was an important occasion because it would be a great way for the community to see what was in store for the week.
Monday also includes the memorial football match at Kelly Park.
Tuesday includes a cultural activity out bush for people to see and experience aboriginal tradition.
Wednesday will celebrate the community’s elders with an Elders Luncheon and there will also be a Family Fun Day at Kelly Park.
Thursday includes art and cooking activities in Roelands.
The Bunbury Regional Prison will host the footy final and lunch on Friday, and to finish the week off with a bang there will be the NAIDOC Ball on Saturday.
