THE Harvey Dam is overflowing for the first time since it was built in 2002.
The dam, which has a capacity of 56 gigalitres has just started to trickle water over the wall.
The Water Corporation has expressed concern that people trying to reach the crest of the dam are risking their lives.
A photo on social media showed people canoeing across the 40 metre dam wall which is more than 25 metres high on the spillway side.
"There is an exclusion zone 150 metres back from the spillway crest for all public," a spokesperson for the Water Corporation said.
"Under no circumstance can the public access this 150 meter zone by either boat, swimming or for fishing.
"The Water Corporation takes safety extremely seriously and will not tolerate any access by the public to these areas.
"The Harvey Dam spillway has never overflowed so we understand that this is an exciting time for the community but we urge those visiting to do so safely and responsibly."
