BUNBURY cyclists rode together down Victoria Street on Saturday in a “critical mass” ride with the aim of drawing attention to the city’s lacking cycling infrastructure.
Greater Bunbury Bicycle Users Group chairman Rob Neale said critical mass rides were a worldwide movement which used the strength in numbers of the cycling community.
“Generally this is done by congesting vehicle traffic in a prominent location and using the attention of media, the local government, and the public to promote cycling causes,” Mr Neale said.
He said the event asked riders to meet at a specific location and ride without leadership, but its purpose was not to antagonise motorists.
“No cyclist needs to infuriate drivers in this town,” he said.
“A slow, five to ten minute parade of law-abiding cyclists riding through the CBD would hopefully demonstrate unity in the cycling community towards the goal of enhanced infrastructure for cycling in the Bunbury region, without instigating road rage.”
Mr Neale said his group endorsed the event because Bunbury had a significant cycling community and a poor cycling infrastructure.
He said the group wanted to make their frustration known to the new local government.
