A PUSH to bring WA’s first Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food Pop Up Kitchen to Bunbury and the South West is a great initiative which deserves community support.
But learning about the program has also raised an important issue which faces thousands of South West residents.
Oliver created the Ministry was created because people just did not understand food.
He said cooking skills used to be passed down through the generations but now that chain has been broken.
A rise in busy working families, the popularity of convenience foods and a lack of compulsory food education in schools has resulted in a generation of people who have not been taught the basics of cooking.
This has led to a rise in diet-related diseases and obesity.
Maybe it’s time we focused on mastering basic cooking skills instead of just ordering take-away and watching My Kitchen Rules.
