Michael Garry ‘Mick’ Twomey
6/5/1944 – 29/3/2014
ABOUT 1000 people paid their respects to prominent Bunbury man Michael ‘Mick’ Twomey following his passing on March 29.
The large crowd farewelled the well-loved Irishman at a memorial service at Bunbury’s St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral on Saturday.
His wife of 25 years Jan Twomey said the main message to come out of the service was that Mick was a true family man.
“Everyone said he was a great bloke to be associated with,” she said.
“He always had a smile on his face and had time for people.”
Coming from a farming family Mick had a very strong bond with the Boyanup, Capel and Dardanup communities.
“He took on the responsibility of the family farm from his father and made a success of it,” Mrs Twomey said.
Mick was also a dedicated member of the Bunbury community having owned Trafa-lgars Hotel in Victoria Street and being a part owner of the Burlington Hotel for years.
As a keen sportsman, Mick played football for the Boyanup-Capel-Dardanup Cardinals before coaching the Bunbury Football Club reserves to a grand final.
A passionate Fremantle fan, Mick was the inaugural president of the South West Dockers Supporters Club.
He also served as a committee member at the Bunbury Turf Club and could often be seen enjoying a laugh trackside.
“I would really like to thank everyone at the race club for hosting the wake and for the amazing support they have offered,” Mrs Twomey said.
“Mick was a mentor to many and he was always happy to share his life experiences.
“He really loved life and he certainly lived a big one.”
Mick is survived by his five children and nine grandchildren.
