MARK “Hoss” Hosking from Western Australian progressive rock band Karnivool took part in a live, online question and answer session with the band’s fans last Thursday in the lead up to their Bunbury Groovin’ the Moo appearance on May 10.
The live chat drew fans from as far away as Turkey, Chile and New Zealand, with Hoss discussing everything from the band’s plans for the Bunbury show, to their coming DVD and vinyl releases and their ARIA-winning 2013 album Asymmetry.
Fans were eager to get their hands on some details of the planned Groovin' the Moo set, with Hoss passing on a few details as to what the punters should expect.
“Expect a big fat Karnivool set,” he said.
“Some old, some new – we might even get Steve to play with his shirt on, although that last one is probably unlikely.”
It is expected that Karnivool’s set will be heavy on tracks from Asymmetry, and fans took the opportunity to ask Hoss about the band’s thoughts on the album’s critical and commercial success.
“I know that was a challenging album for a lot of people, despite it getting our best response I know a lot of people are opinionated about it, which is awesome and kinda why we write the music we do,” he said.
“We were more surprised by the commercial success of the album, only because it's far from a mainstream album but the responses were great – people loving it, people hating it, people thinking and opening their minds to new things.”
Fans were excited to be told that a DVD is in the works, as well as a vinyl version of their latest LP, with Hoss explaining how the band are taking their time to get both just right.
“The DVD has been semi-shelved since last year as we really want it to be something special,” he said.
“We have such a mass of footage and lots of pieces but are missing that something to make it a real release, so it’s still in the works and there is no release date as yet.”
The fans were quick to question Hosking about the band’s plans for dealing with the time restrictions that come with playing a festival show, with the guitarist explaining the band will unleash a mix of songs designed to give the punters the best bang for their buck.
“We will do our best to pick songs that make the set flow well and keep people happy with song choices,” he said.
“Some olden goldens and some newer fresher stuff to keep it interesting I hope!”
Karnivool play the Groovin’ the Moo festival on May 10 at 5.55pm on the main stage.
