HERE in Bunbury the Roller Derby girls take their sport pretty seriously.
So when they heard the Gold City Rollers team in Kalgoorlie were bragging about the local police helping them set a speed record, the Bunbury girls set out to beat them.
The Kalgoorlie skaters had an officer attend their training session with a high-tech laser speed gun to record a fastest speed of 26 kilometres an hour.
Back in Bunbury, the skaters put the call out to the local police to help them prove that their squad was the best.
Cue South West Traffic acting officer-in-charge Sergeant Rob-ert Malcolm who put the girls through their paces at a training session on Monday night.
“As police we don’t always engage with the community in negative situations – occasionally we get out and have some fun too,” Sergeant Malcolm said.
“Timing the skaters is a nice change of pace.”
Amber ‘Maykinu Bleed’ King and Cathryne ‘2Katty’ McDonagh shared the winning honours with a record-equalling time.
“I’m pretty sure my time was 26 point something which should really be rounded up giving Bunbury the record,” Ms King joked.
The next Bunbury Roller Derby bout will take place on May 3 at the Eaton Recreation Centre from 6pm.
