RALLY DRIVING: For Australind father and son duo Paul and Jason Lowther rallying has been a life-long passion.
The pair competed in the 30th annual Quit Forest Rally in Busselton and Nannup earlier this month and enjoy racing together.
“My father and I started competing together last year but individually, dad has been involved for the past 40 years and myself for most of my life to some degree,” Jason said.
The exciting sport see drivers and navigators compete in bush settings in a bid to be the fastest from point to point.
Paul and Jason have their sights set on the Clubman Cup.
“The Clubman Cup section of the WA state rally championships represents the grass roots level of rallying,” Jason said.
“It is generally half rally distance without the opportunity to drive the roads prior to the event which adds an extra challenge and reduces the cost involved in competing at each event.”
The sport has a reputation for attracting adrenalin junkies and carries obvious risks.
“The risk factor is an exciting element to rallying but it’s also the challenge of building and maintaining a motor vehicle to successfully complete each event,” Jason said.
“The risks are always in the back of our minds but part of the challenge of rallying is driving within the limits of the car and ourselves.”
