RACING: With just one race meeting of the season left, there is a new leader in the Bunbury Turf Club Horse of the Year competition.
The Simon Foster-trained Angel Wing took out the last event of the nine race card on Easter Monday with local jockey Glenn Smith aboard to move one point clear of Low Flying.
Perfectly placed in barrier six, the six-year-old mare bounced out of the barrier and was restrained back to tenth in the field of twelve.
Smith had the horse sitting in ninth on the turn and never panicked.
With a quick turn of foot the horse took the lead and won in a three way go to the line.
Placing second was the Bruce Watkin and Gary Hitchcock trained Bayella for jockey Bronwyn Mathieson and Make Your Move for trainer Justin Warwick and jockey William Pike third with a short head separating the tree.
The ever consistent Pike took out a riding double aboard the Ross and Clint Price trainer Pinot Reilly in race four and the Grant Williams trainer Star of Husson in race five.
The second victory puts Grant Williams in the lead for the Trainer of the Year award and Pike the lead in the Rider of the Year competition, two points clear of Bunbury jockey Kyra Yuill.
Yuill combined with her trainer father Graham to claim victory in race two with their horse Ransonnet.
2013 Bunbury Cup winning jockey Jarrad Noske also completed a riding double taking out race three aboard Elite Flight and race eight aboard Miss Chloetamash.
In the other events of the day Chanelle O’Grady took out race one aboard Tatoli for trainer Liz Strempel, Apache Rocket won race six with jockey Shaun Mc Gruddy aboard and String of Smiles won race seven for jockey Jason Whiting and trainer Gary Crispin.
The final race meeting of the season will take place on May 1.
