A GROUP of youngsters gather at Withers PYC to watch the launch of an indigenous hip hop video.
As their own faces appeared on screen to the backdrop of choreographed hip hop, a sense of pride settled around the hall.
The Indigenous Hip Hop Projects (IHHP) crew were in Bunbury to host an intensive week-long project aimed at teaching local youth confidence through music and dance.
IHHP consists of talented artists who travel Australia-wide to deliver hip hop performances and workshops to engage young indigenous people.
IHHP leader Dallas Woods said everyone who participated in the workshop took away something different.
“They all get something they can relate to from the hip hop,” Mr Woods said.
“It’s about confidence. They all got a taste of the fame life this week.”
Mr Woods said the workshop also addressed ways for young people to deal with mental health issues.
“We’re trying to spread awareness to focus on the positives instead of the negatives.”
He said seeing older kids helping younger ones brought home the need to encourage young indigenous adults to become leaders in their community.
“Being a good role model makes you want to be a better person.”
“I know the story all too well. I just want to tell them to make the right decisions early on because they can have an impact.”
