BASKETBALL: The South West Slammers men’s team have kept their finals chances well and truly alive with a thrilling two point win over the top-of-the-table Geraldton Buccaneers at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday night.
Getting away to a fast start the Slammers shot five three-pointers to take a 29 – 28 lead into quarter time.
Import and dunk-king Markus Monroe showed off his prowess taking the rock to the hole with style and guiding the Slammers to a 57 – 48 lead at half time.
The Buccaneers turned the tides in the third quarter with Bennis Lewis and Carter Cook helping to bridge the gap to a single point at the final change.
But the ever-reliable Ty Harrelson (26) and Clive Weeden (23) kept a cool head under pressure to guide the Slammers home 104 – 102.
The win sees the Slammers sitting in eighth place on the ladder, one game clear of the Mandurah Magic who they will take on at the Eaton Recreation Centre this Saturday with the winner likely to knock the loser out of the race for playoffs.
