THE growing interest in breeding and training greyhounds for racing across Bunbury and the South West has spurred on the push for a track in the city.
The newly formed South West Greyhound Association met with the Bunbury Trotting Club last week to discuss the progress of co-locating a track at the Carey Park site.
Association leader Grant Campbell said the club had applied to become an incorporated body and would work to grow its membership to prove the region was worthy of investment.
“We have to be proactive in establishing ourselves to prove that we are serious about this,” association president Grant Campbell said.
“The trotting club has a magnificent complex which has been upgraded in recent years but they struggle with a lack of meetings and dollars coming in.”
Track manager Steve De Campo said the club was keen to help out in any way possible to make greyhound racing a reality.
Mr De Campo said establishing a greyhound track at the Bunbury facility would not require a great deal of work.
“We could run it in conjunction with the trots or on a different day – there are a lot of greyhound owners and trainers in the South West and the number is continually growing,” Mr De Campo said.
Currently there are three greyhound tracks in WA – at Northam, Cannington and Mandurah.
