BUNBURY beef processor V & V Walsh is in discussions with Woolworths to process a new line of organic beef from local farmers.
V & V Walsh chief executive Peter Walsh said he was looking forward to the possibility of processing meat for the supermarket chain.
“It would be good for both companies – we would welcome the extra business,” Mr Walsh said.
Last Wednesday an organic beef information day was held by Australian Organic Meats at Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre where 10 interested farmers took part.
“Most of the attendees will be taking part in the project,” Australian Organic Meats director Simone Tully said.
“The producers were taken step by step through the organic certification process, and learnt about the customer requirements and opportunities.”
Ms Tully said beef producers would be able to benefit by increasing their sale prices by 30 to 50 per cent
“They can grow their business with confidence in one of the fastest growing agricultural sectors,” Ms Tully said.
A Woolworths spokesperson said demand for organic beef was very high in Western Australia and the company was working to increase its supply.
“At this stage we have not entered into any deal with new suppliers or to grow existing vendors but we are continuing to work to increase supply of organic meat,” the spokesperson said.
