AN explosives facility appears set to move to the Shire of Harvey with council reaching an agreement with the Department of Lands at their meeting on Tuesday night.
In October 2013, council considered a confidential item about the relocation of the Baldivis Explosives Site to the McLarty site in the state forest.
The site is about 130 hectares located on the southern side of Johnston Road, about two kilometres east of the Forrest Highway and 12 kilometres west of the South Western Highway.
The current explosives site in Karnup is proposed to be used for urban expansion.
Approval of the application involves rezoning the 130 hectares area from state forest to special use.
President Tanya Jackson said council had been briefed on the proposal and have voted in favour of approving it.
“The facility would be used for the storage of commercial use explosives for mining and farming,” she said.
“The land would have a series of bunkers and would have five jobs created for the security of the facility.”
The council will now engage in public consultation before the plan is signed off.
