A SURFBOARD signed by reigning Margaret River Pro champions Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore is set to raise vital funds for kids in need.
Donated to major sponsor Telstra, and signed by dozens of other professional surfers, it will be auctioned off for charity Save The Children.
The board was presented on the beach in Bunbury earlier this month.
Twitter will be used to promote the auction, with the hope the signatory riders retweet to their fans.
State event, partnership and fundraising manager Anne-Marie Denny spoke to the Bunbury Mail about the initiative and what it meant for children doing it tough.
She said funds raised from the auction would assist programs locally.
“For us it’s very important in funding our operations and programs to support youth,” Ms Denny said.
“We’d certainly like to thank all the people involved with getting the signed board to us.”
Telstra area general manager Boyd Brown said the surfers were very pleased to be a part of this initiative to support charity groups like Save the Children.
“We really appreciate Surfing WA for getting on board and making this happen, pardon the pun,” Mr Brown said.
Last year Save the Children responded to more than 25 humanitarian crises and reached 1.4 million children and adults.
Their responses included Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and the Syrian conflict, as well as flooding and bushfires in Australia.
The foundation also provides healthcare and child protection to some of the world's most vulnerable children.
The board will be auctioned during the Save The Children Imagine Ball on November 1, hosted at the opulent Government House Ballroom in Perth.
