The Sydney Morning Herald chief photographer Brendan Esposito's pictures of typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines have been recognised with a prestigious news award.
Esposito won in the national/metropolitan news photography category at Thursday night's Newspaper of the Year awards, also known as the PANPA awards.
Fairfax Media's Newcastle Herald took out the daily regional newspaper award and the regional news website award, while the paper's photographer, Phil Hearne, won best news photography for a regional newspaper for his image of exhausted firefighters during the bushfires in 2013.

A team from Fairfax Media's The Canberra Times won best Niche/Specialty App or Microsite for The Silent War. The interactive project was written by Scott Hannaford and featured photographs by Melissa Adams and design by Marco Mana and Kathleen Vrinat.
It detailed the struggle many Australian soldiers faced dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from the Afghanistan war.
