The City of Subiaco will be asked to report back to its council within a month on possible options to relocate the endangered Station Street Markets.
The council voted unamimously on Tuesday night to endorse a motion put forward by Councillor Stephanie Stroud, requesting the city's chief executive undertake research to identify options for a future location of the markets in the short, medium and longer terms.
The only alteration to the motion was the timeframe, with an original period of two months for the research shortened to one month.
The news was welcomed by Islam Bouyahia, the organiser of a campaign to save the markets.
"Now we have four weeks to wait before the council meet again regarding this matter, with concrete solutions and plans," Mr Bouyahia said.
"Thanks to all of you for your support. We could not have reached a result like this as fast if we were not together."
Since it was reported the markets could close as soon as December - to make way for a multi-storey Coles-Target redevelopment - the SAVE Subiaco Market Facebook page has accumulated more than 8700 "likes" and more than 13,000 people have signed a hard copy petition supporting the markets' continued existence.
The final say on the development application for the privately-owned Station Street markets site will lie with the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority.
But the City of Subiaco will be consulted as part of the MRA's assessment of the application and there will also be an opportunity for members of the public to have their say.
