SEAN Scallan prides himself on being unique.
The Bunbury paraplegic has become the first disabled mowing service owner-operator in the South West.
Coming up with the idea for his business, Unique Mowing, about 6 months ago, Mr Scallan approached Forrest Personnel to work out the logistics.
The disability employment service helped him custom-fit a maintenance trailer, ride-on mower and vehicle, allowing him to operate autonomously.
Mr Scallan told business that the motivation behind starting the mowing service was a stint doing maintenance work in Tasmania.
“When I moved over here [to Bunbury], I needed to do something for myself – I have been volunteering for a long time” Mr Scallan said.
He prides himself on offering affordable mowing to pensioners and single mums.
“What actually gave me the brain wave was people in need – if you have a pension card or disability card it’s 30 bucks.”
The business specialises in medium sized yards and includes mowing, whipper-snipping and spraying.
Mr Scallan had a message for others facing his situation.
“Believe in your ability and understand there are no boundaries, just do it.”
Forrest Personnel employment consultant Sophie Burton said Mr Scallan was living proof people with disability could adapt to any type of work.
“I guess for people in his situation he is an inspiration for others – you think because of his condition he might not be able to do maintenance or mowing but he’s proof people can,” Ms Burton said.
