INLINE SKATING: When one thinks of ways to save the orangutans in Borneo, skating the English coastline does not spring to mind.
But for former Bunbury resident Aleesha Hanczakowski, now living in the United Kingdon, putting her skates to work is the perfect way to promote the cause.
Hanczakowski, 22, has represented Australia at the world championships four times and told the Bunbury Mail she is looking to combine her passions and abilities for a worthy cause.
“Next week I will be inline skating solo across the south coast of England with the goal of fundraising $5000 to help improve the conservation effort in Borneo,” she said.
“The Bornean orangutan is endangered and facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.”
Hanczakowski said her passion for the project developed on a recent trip to Borneo.
“When I travelled to Borneo I engaged in the rehabilitation efforts at the Matang Wildlife centre where I was able to observe the released semi-wild orangutans and the different habitats Borneo offers,” she said.
“I have chosen to support the charity as I have experienced firsthand that those involved are highly dedicated and care passionately about trying to make the lives of animals better.
“Orangutans are dying because of the destruction of their habitat through land clearing and every single one remaining is important is the species is to survive.”
Hanczakowski has been hard at work preparing for the challenge, skating and running every day.
“I use my skates for transport to get to work and around town and combine it with running for fitness,” she said.
“As well as merging my passions of skating, the environment and conservation, I am excited to see a large part of the country which I am yet to explore.”
