There are few professional uniforms that face as much scrutiny than those worn by flight attendants. Airlines regularly redesign them and often employ some of the trendiest local designers to come up with the new look.

But Lufthansa has looked to the past this week by dressing up its cabin crew in traditional Bavarian folk costumes to mark the start of the annual Oktoberfest in Munich.

A crew of 12 women and two men departed earlier this week on a Munich to Beijing flight. Other Lufthansa flights featuring crew in the uniforms will fly to Sao Paulo and Mexico City in early October.

The specially dressed crews will also fly on selected European flights.

Traditional costumes will also be worn by Lufthansa staff at Munich Airport.

Millions of beer drinkers from around the world will converge on Munich this week to begin the two-week Oktoberfest, the 181st, though the event celebrated it's 200th anniversary in 2010 (it was cancelled on several occasions over the years, including during World War II).

Flight attendant uniforms have often proven controversial - earlier this year Cathay Pacific flight attendants objected to the "revealing" uniforms female crew were forced to wear. Japanese airline Skymark also came under fire over the shortness of its flight attendants' skirts.

Qantas last revamped its flight attendant uniforms last year, with outfits designed by Martin Grant.
