FACING her first birthday without her beloved Nan was always going to be a challenge for 13-year-old Bunbury girl Tayah Burrows.
But what she did to mark the occasion is sure to inspire you and give you a glimpse of her kind and generous spirit.
Tayah's Nan Gail Catalano spent 12 weeks in the Palliative Care unit at St John of God Hospital before passing away in December.
In that time, the facility became a second home for Tayah and her family with comfort provided by the thoughtful nature of the staff.
Mrs Catalano had always put a lot of effort into birthdays and Tayah said she knew that this year is would not be the same.
So the young girl asked those close to her who would normally buy her a gift to give her money which she could donate to the Palliative Care unit.
Her family and friends rose to the occasion and last week Tayah proudly visited the hospital with a donation of $1150.
"While I was sad, I tried to think of other and how they were feeling," she said,
"When I made the donation, I felt so happy to know I was making a difference."
Tayah's mother Shelley Burrows said he daughter has taught her a beautiful way to deal with grief.
"Tayah is very much like her grandmother and I am so proud of her giving spirit," Mrs Burrows said.
"She is a real chip off the old block."
The Palliative Care unit presented Tayah with a remembrance candle to light on special occasions and said the money will be put towards making life easier for both patients and staff.
