CRICKET: The weather held off just long enough on Saturday for the Dalyellup Beach Settlers to claim a second consecutive win in the Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association.
The Settlers put up a strong total of 202 in the first innings and defended it with ease denying Collie any chance of a win.
Tim Cooper (39 runs) and Corey Fagan (18) put up an opening partnership of 45 to get Dalyellup on their way before Matthew Green and Scott Harber were dismissed for single figure totals.
But it was a standout 89 run partnership to Saksham Gupta and Matt Fink that put Dalyellup in the driver’s seat.
Gupta collected 43 runs for the day while Fink top scored with 65 before being bowled out by Jason Borret.
A collapse in the tail order batsmen didn’t worry the Settlers who had done enough to put forth a solid total.
Borret claimed Collie’s best bowling figures with 3/37.
Collie’s batting innings was far from inspirational as they failed to break into a triple figure total.
Seth White gave the Coalminers a decent start with 18 runs but was eventually bowled by Peter Grygorcewicz.
Blair Malatesta was Collie’s top scorer with an unbeaten 28, but with eight batsmen falling for single figure scores it’s no surprise that the game was over early.
David White claimed the figures of 3/17 for the Settlers while Ben Cooper picked up two wickets for a stingy six runs.
Next week the Settlers will take on reigning champions Colts while Collie will have the bye week.
It was a heartbreaking affair for the Hay Park Redbacks on Saturday who fell just short of picking up their first win of the season against Marist.
Hay Park batted first posting a total of 9/144 after 44.7 overs.
Jono Whitney (15), Ryan Leybourne (17), Brendan Jones (18), Mark Steven (14), Steve Florance (19) and Jonathan Miller (26) all hit double figure scores to help the Redbacks.
But a statement performance from Ryan O’Connell who put forth 61 runs set up Marist for the win.
Marist chased down the total in 44.6 overs finishing with a score of 9/145.
This was another quick game with Colts chasing down Leschenault’s total of 96 runs in their 19th over.
Leschenault had eight consecutive wickets fall in their innings in which the batsman could not tally more than four runs.
Tom Buchanan was the only contributor with more than 20 as he finished with 24.
Kyle Davis top scored for Colts with 35 runs while Tyler Robertson (28), Murray Goodwin (13), Shane Mooney (10) and Clayton Caltsounis (8) all scored in the innings.
Josh Topliss was the day’s best bowler with the figures of 3/13.
