A PARTY in a paddock has transformed into a well-established platform for changing lives thanks to a dedicated group of young leaders.
Project Kate has become a well-known concept across Greater Bunbury, starting in 2012 as a local charity DJ music festival to raise money for a little girl from Waterloo with a rare childhood cancer.
Last year the Kane family from Bridgetown were the beneficiaries of the event, receiving a helping hand to the tune of $15,000 for little Declan’s battle against neuroblastoma.
This year the young committee have had to relocate the event and have their sights set on Brunswick Showgrounds.
At last night's Harvey shire council meeting, councillors voted in favour of allowing the event to be held on the grounds.
Event manager Jack Manoni said the team was in the process of becoming an incorporated and charitable organisation.
“What was initially a party in a paddock to raise a bit of money has taken on a life of its own,” Mr Manoni said.
“We have been so lucky that the community has been so responsive and thrown its support behind this – we have to keep it going and make the most of that people power.”
Mr Manoni said this year’s event would incorporate local health services to make it a well-rounded festival that would promote positive messages long after the last act has left the stage.
It will come to Brunswick on December 13. Search for Project Kate on Facebook for more information.
